Peter Potamus was
a friendly purple hippo who, with his sidekick So-So the
monkey, traveled back in time in his magic flying balloon.
Using the ship's time compass, the pair traveled to the past,
often encountering well known figures from history and
folklore. Finding themselves in some form of conflict wherever
they ventured, nearly every episode ended with Peter using his
secret weapon, his "Hippo Hurricane Holler" to overcome
whatever adversary he was facing. Peter would take a deep breath, then let out a howling
gust of wind that would blow his adversary away. Typical of
kids' half-hour cartoons of the time, the show was divided
into three segments. Accompanying the hippo's adventures were
Breezly and Sneezly in the second segment, and Yippee, Yappee
and Yahooey in the third segment.
After two seasons in syndication, the show was picked up by
ABC for one season and renamed The Peter Potamus Show. Under
this new title, the Breezly and Sneezly segment was swapped
for Ricochet Rabbit, from The Magilla Gorilla Show.
Peter Potamus, like Magilla Gorilla before him, never
achieved the lasting fame of some of his Hanna-Barbera cartoon
contemporaries, mainly because his show was a little “out
there” in terms of story and characters. What the show lacked
in familiarity it made up for in originality, and while Peter
will never be as well known as Yogi Bear or Huckleberry Hound,
he will be remembered fondly by those lucky enough to enjoy
his travels. |
