Synopsis:

It was the perfect mix of satire, slapstick and distinct personalities - all wrapped up in prime-time's first animated series. Originally envisioned as an animated version of The Honeymooners set in prehistoric times, The Flintstones became one of the longest-running and most beloved cartoon shows ever.

Living on Cobblestone Lane in the jurassic town of Bedrock, Fred and Wilma Flintstone played the stone-age counterparts to Ralph and Alice Kramden, with neighbors Barney Rubble (acting as the goofy and laid-back Ed Norton to Fred’s loud-mouth Kramden) and his wife Betty living next-door. With faithful buddy Barney at his side, Fred Flintstone would continually find himself in hot water through some outrageous scheme or unwitting mishap of his own doing. The two would ultimately have to answer to the true voice of authority - their wives.

Living in the stone-age didn't keep the Flintstones from enjoying the best of modern conveniences. From a ram's horn telephone (a must for Wilma's gossip sessions) to a skin-topped convertible with stone wheels, the series was constantly showing contemporary gadgets with a stone-age twist. Even something as simple as the paperboy throwing Fred his Sunday edition was a major hoot - especially when the oversized stone tablet nailed him in the head.

In the show's third season a new bundle of joy entered Fred and Wilma's lives. On February 22, 1963, Pebbles Flintstone was born, and as with all proud poppas, Fred revealed his softer side when interacting with his baby girl. Certainly, it was cause for him to shout his trademark expression of glee, “Yabba-dabba-doo!”

The next season brought Pebbles a playmate when the Rubbles adopted the energetic Bamm Bamm, whose favorite activity was hitting things with a club while repeatedly shouting his name. Luckily, he was also adorable, so the Rubbles never returned him.

The Flintstones aired on Friday nights on ABC at 7:30 and included such sponsors as: Winston, Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Day Vitamins, and Post Cereals. New episodes were produced for six seasons (September 30, 1960 - September 2, 1966), and then the series was rebroadcast on NBC for several seasons (January 17, 1967 - August 1969; September 6, 1969 - September 5, 1970). Since that time, the Flintstones have been the subject of three feature films and countless spin-offs and specials, not to mention years of product endorsement.

Opening Lyrics:

"Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.

They're the modern stone age family.

From the town of Bedrock,

They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the family down the street.

Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet.

When you're with the Flintstones

you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.

A dabba doo time.

You'll have a gay old time."

Opening Themes:

The only difference between season 3 and 4 is that a whistle sounds instead of a screech when the bird's tail is pulled at the quarry at the end of Fred's workday.
